ABOUT DIGESTIVE Enzymes

Little argument can be made that more study could be done to prove or disprove the effectiveness of digestive enzymes on reflux or GERD. The rationale behind treating reflux or GERD with digestive enzymes is that if you speed up or improve digestion the food will move through the system faster leaving less chance for reflux episodes, somewhat the same idea behind motility agents.

One thing is for sure though, the body needs enzymes for proper digestion as they break food down into usable parts. Our bodies produce some of these enzymes and some are found in the food we eat.  There are lots of different types of digestive enzymes and each are used to break down different types of foods. The major types are:

  • Amylases: These break down carbohydrates

  • Lipases: Break down fats

  • Cellulases: (found in plants) Break down fiber

  • Proteases: Break down protein
